Thomas Jefferson University is an independent Medical School and medical research institution. Founded in 1824 , it is located in Center City , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . The affiliated Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is highly ranked in Rehabilitation Medicine , Cardiology , and Orthopedic Medicine . The university also takes an active role in medical research.

It began as Jefferson Medical College in 1824. On July 1, 1969 the institution officially became Thomas Jefferson University.

The university is made up of three colleges:

It houses Thomas Eakins ' painting The Gross Clinic which depicts a surgery that took place at the school. On November 11, 2006, the Thomas Jefferson University Board voted to sell the painting for $68 million to the National Gallery Of Art in Washington and the new Crystal Bridges Museum Of American Art , now under construction in Bentonville, Arkansas . The sale would represent a record price for an artwork made in the United States prior to World War II.
