"The One with the Girl from Poughkeepsie" is the tenth episode of season four of the Television Situation Comedy '' Friends ''. First aired: December 18 , 1997 PLOT Ross meets an attractive, funny, intelligent woman on a train. The only problem is that she lives in Poughkeepsie , which is more than two and half hours away. He then meets another girl who lives close by but is not as fun as the first one. Very tired from the constant commute to Poughkeepsie, but uninterested Ross takes Phoebe's advice to break up with both women, but his problems only multiply when he falls asleep on the train to Poughkeepsie. Waking up on the train, Ross discovers he is now in Montreal and being approached by another beautiful woman — who lives "just a two-hour ferry ride away" in Nova Scotia . Depressed that she doesn't have a boyfriend during the holidays, Rachel is so desperate that she is willing to even have a Fling and agrees to be set up with one of Chandler's co-workers. While trying to determine who Rachel should go out with — and receiving bribes when the guys find out that the desperate fix-up will be "hot Rachel" — Chandler mentions that Rachel is only interested in a fling, which makes her upset when she likes one of the men and would like to pursue a relationship. When he tries to fix the situation by telling the men she wants someone with whom to get serious, he only makes it worse by Scaring Them Off . "You IDIOT!" Rachel shouts, and he replies, "I'm sure you're right, but why?!" Monica's new job as head chef at Alessandro's is not going well as the rest of the staff don't like her. To help Monica establish her authority, Joey takes an idea from Orson Welles (whom he thinks directs Burger King commercials) and agrees to be hired and then publicly fired. But when Joey sees how much money he can make in tips, helping out Monica doesn't seem to be the most important thing anymore. He gets along well with the staff and even comes up with a new "work name" — Dragon. But when he realizes what hardships Monica has to undergo because of the others, he purposefully talks back to Monica and lets her fire him. Phoebe is working on a holiday song that mentions everyone in the gang. While she has little trouble rhyming some names ("Joey" and "snowy," "Monica" and " Hanukkah "), she struggles to rhyme either Chandler or Rachel, whose name initially she pairs with Dreidel in an attempt at Approximate Rhyme . Eventually her song ends up as: :Went to the store, sat on Santa 's lap :Asked him to bring my friends all kinds of crap :He said, "All you need is to write them a song" :You haven't heard it yet, so don't try to sing along :No, don't sing along... :Monica, Monica, have a happy Hanukkah :Saw Santa Claus, he said hello to Ross :And please tell Joey, Christmas will be snooo-ooo-wwyyyy! :And Rachel and Chandler, have (''unintelligible lyric ending vaguely in "-andler"'') :Happy holidays, everyone!
