Terry Walsh




Terry Walsh (born November 20 , 1953 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia ) is a former Field Hockey striker from Australia , who competed in two Olympic Games for his native country. Highlights were winning the silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal , and the gold medal at the Hockey World Cup in London , 1986 . In total he competed in 165 international matches for Australia.

After his active career he became a hockey coach, first with Malaysia . Walsh was appointed Head Coach of The Kookaburras and the Australian Institute Of Sport Men's Hockey Unit after the 1996 Summer Olympics . He led the Men's National Team to the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics , but was sacked afterwards, and replaced by former team mate Barry Dancer .

In December 2003 he was appointed head coach of The Netherlands , their first foreign coach ever, after Joost Bellaart had to step down after an internal crisis within the Holland squad. Walsh led the Dutch to the silver medal in Athens , where his former team Australia won the final after a golden goal by striker Jamie Dwyer . After the Champions Trophy in Lahore , where The Netherlands finished second once again, he stepped down and became the Technical Director for USA Field Hockey .
