The Tasmanian football (soccer) championship has been decided using two systems, a short lived state wide league and also a playoff between Northern and Southern leagues.

THE TASMANIAN STATE LEAGUE

The Tasmanian State League was the highest state-level Football competition in Tasmania prior to being disbanded in 2000. Nationally, it was considered one grade lower than the A-League , then called the National Soccer League . It was administered by the Football Federation Tasmania (FFT) (at the time named Soccer Tasmania), the state's governing body.

The State League began in 1978, and replaced the former system of Northern champions playing off against southern champions which had continued since 1910. The league was briefly suspended from 1982 until 1987, but then resumed for the next 12 years.

RESUMPTION OF CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYOFF

As of 2000, the State League became defunct, and the Southern and Northern Premier League s have become the state's highest level of Football competition. After the demise of the State League, the state championship has reverted to the format of the two regional leagues determining a southern and northern champion, who then play-off for the state championship.

As of 2006 their have been persistent rumours that the Football Federation of Tasmania has plans to resume a State league in the near future. It seems most likely to consist of 3 southern, 3 northern and 2 north-western teams.
