Manchester has a recognisable Skyline and a number of notable tall buildings and structures. The tallest buildings in Manchester are the 169 m (561 ft) Beetham Tower and the 118 m (387 ft) CIS Tower (which was once the tallest building in Europe ). Most of Manchester's towers were built during the Sixties and Seventies . However, in the last few years there has been a renewed interest in building skyscrapers in Manchester. Numerous residential, hotel and office developments are under construction or have recently been built in the City Centre . The tallest building in the United Kingdom outside of London , the Beetham Tower, was completed in October 2006. It is 47 storeys and 169m / 561ft high and consists of residential apartments and a Hilton hotel. Proposals for an even taller (58 storey, 188m) building near Piccadilly Station , known as the Piccadilly Tower (previously known as Inacity Tower), were recently approved by the City Council, as well as a 44 storey building close by called the Albany Crown Tower . Many other high rise buildings have been approved or are proposed for Manchester (as well as nearby Salford ).
