The Home Guard ( Hemvärnet ) consists of around 42000 soldiers aged 18-60. Many of the soldiers have served abroad in the various peacekeeping missions of the regular army. All of the Home Guard are volunteers, and they form the equivalent of a well equipped militia. All personnel accepted into the Home Guard must at least have done the " Boot Camp " service in any branch of the swedish armed forces of about three months. Once signed up, training is also voluntary and consists of a minimum of 20-80 hours a year, though senior soldiers and those on call can do up to 300 hours a year to refresh their military skills.

The Home Guard is usually the first of the Army to be dispached in the event of a natural disaster or some other incident requring military assistance.

PROFESSIONAL SOLDIERS

Sweden has until only a few years ago had a conscript army with only a small amount of professional officers and pilots. All the rank of NCO´s was designated as conscript ranks.
The army does from the year 2007 recruit conscripts to become professional soldiers in the new Nordic Battle Group force after the end of service.
The army has employed soldiers for UN-service on shorter contracts since the 1950´s for service abroad.
