"Stay Away" is a song by the 1990s Grunge band, Nirvana . It is the tenth song on their 1991 Album , '' Nevermind ''. The lyrics were written by Kurt Cobain , and the music by Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl . Kurt says the song is about "classic alienation". The line screamed by Kurt at the end of the song " God is Gay " comes from a line Kurt claimed he used to Spraypaint on buildings and trucks as a teenager. The original title of the song was " Pay To Play ", which appears on the '' With The Lights Out '' box set. Stay Away was covered live by British alt-rock band Reuben on some dates of their February 2007 UK tour.
