The Spain national basketball team is the Basketball side that represents Spain in international competitions. They are reigning World Champions .

EUROBASKET 1935

The Spanish side came in third place at the first Europe an basketball championship, the Eurobasket 1935 held by the International Basketball Federation 's FIBA Europe continental federation. They defeated Belgium in the preliminary round and Czechoslovakia in the semifinals to qualify for the final match against Latvia . The Spaniards lost that game 24-18 to finish with the Silver Medal .

Scores showed which now appear as really low figures in the early times of basketball: new rules which came to increase dynamism such as the Three-point Shot were still very far to be implemented in 1935.
Spain scored fewer points, 64, than every other team except Hungary and Romania , the two last-place teams in the field of ten. However, they also gave up fewer points than any other side except the champion Latvians.

1984 LOS ANGELES OLYMPICS

Before the Spanish national team achieving the golden medal in the 2006 FIBA World Championship (see below), their greatest international success had been reaching the final in the 1984 Summer Olympics which took place in Los Angeles . The other finalist being the U.S.A. national team (led by Patrick Ewing and featuring a young Michael Jordan ), which won the final and with it the gold medal. Spain, thus, took the olympic silver medal.

FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2006

On September 3, 2006, Spain won the gold medal game at the 2006 FIBA World Championship against Greece . The game, held in Saitama , Japan , ended with a final score of 70-47. This marks the first time the Spanish national basketball team won the gold medal in the World Championships .

Pau Gasol was named the tournament MVP, and Jorge Garbajosa also made the all-tournament team.
