INTRODUCTION

The Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) is a global nonprofit membership organization designed to enhance the skills of Knowledge Professionals in order to help their companies.

SCIP provides education and networking opportunities for business professionals working in the field of competitive intelligence (the legal and ethical collection and analysis of information regarding the capabilities, vulnerabilities, and intentions of business competitors).

Established in 1986, SCIP has more 50 chapters around the world, with individual members in more than 50 nations. SCIP has alliance partnerships with independent affiliate organizations in many countries. SCIP's membership has grown to more than 3,500 worldwide.

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT

After the Cold War ended, many U.S. (ex-) intelligence officers aimed at a career in the private industry. In 1986 the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals was founded in the U.S. and grew to 6000 worldwide, mainly in the U.S. but growing numbers especially in UK and Germany. In 1997 the Ecole de Guerre Economique (School of economic warfare) was founded in Paris, France. It is the first European institution, which teaches the tactics of economic warfare within a globalizing world. In Germany, Competitive Intelligence was unattended until the early 1990s. The term Competitive Intelligence first appeared in German literature in 1997. In 1995 a German SCIP chapter was founded, which is now second in terms of members in Europe. In summer 2004 the Institute for Competitive Intelligence was founded, which provides a post-graduate certification program for Competitive Intelligence Professionals. Japan is currently the only country, that officially maintains an economic intelligence agency (JETRO). It was founded by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in 1958.

SCIP FELLOWS

The Fellows Award was created to honor SCIP members for their exceptional efforts to promote and assist both the Society and the CI profession. The candidates are nominated by their fellow members and must have completed five years of valued and recognized service to the Society. Candidates may come from any field, including academia, business, and government, but within that field they must have made an outstanding contribution to the competitive intelligence profession. That contribution must be documented and supported by several individuals (including at least one current Fellow) who can personally attest to the importance of the candidate’s contribution.
