Shot-Online is an online Golf game. It is a 3D massively multiplayer online role-playing game ( MMORPG ) allowing character development and play against other users. The game, which debuted in 2004, is produced by OnNet Co., Ltd. of Seoul , South Korea .

GAMEPLAY

Introduction

As with other Role-playing Game s, a player's first step is to create a Character (one or more, but a maximum of three per registered account is allowed). There are six different Character Types . Each character type has a unique appearance along with a unique set of values for stats. After completing a tutorial that explains the basics of swinging, putting, choosing clubs, etc., the player's character will enter a virtual world, which consists of:

  • The Square - the common area where players gather to interact with other players, to rest after a round (periodically required to reduce fatigue), or to visit NPC s.

  • Various 18-hole golf Courses of varying difficulty. (Fourteen courses as of January 2007.)

  • A driving range, putting green and other practice areas.

  • (NEW) An Auction House to auction off your items.

  • Gameplay is fairly straightforward. A player can golf alone or join a room with up to three other players. For each hole completed, the character earns both Experience Point s and in-game currency called NG. More experience points are awarded when playing with others. When the player accumulates enough experience points, his/her character will advance to the next level. When a player accumulates enough NG, he/she can use it to purchase items such as new clubs, balls, clothing, greens fees, and club repair fees.

The Square

In-Game Currency

The in-game currency of Shot Online is called NG (which has been referred to as "Not Gold"). NG can be earned by playing rounds of golf, selling items, trading with other players and even by practicing. After a shot or completion of a hole, depending upon many factors, you may also receive NG. When you accumulate enough NG, you can purchase items such as new clubs, balls and clothing from players or NPCs alike. NG is also used to pay greens fees, club repair fees, and tournament fees.

Player Levels

There are four types of player levels in Shot Online. As a person advances in level more options are made available, such as the ability to create guilds, use more clubs, and overall do better on the course.

Levels and distinct characteristics are as follows:

  • Beginner

Penalties and Bonuses

;Penalties
  • Water/Water Edge/Lava: One stroke penalty, ball is placed at the last playable area from where it went out. Note that the dirt area surrounding the water also counts as water, however the ball is placed at a safe drop with no shot penalty if it lands here.

  • Out of Bounds: One stroke penalty, ball is placed at the same place as the prior shot. Out of Bounds is designated by a light or dark change in grass, cliff areas, or where designated on the course.

  • Shot Clock Violation: If a player does not shoot within the round's designated time limit on a shot, that person receives a one stroke penalty and all golfers cycle through with the violator being last. If the person violates the shot clock twice in a row that player is removed from the round.

;Bonuses
  • Hole In One: Scoring a hole in one rewards 100,000 NG.

  • Albatross: Scoring an albatross (3 under par, also known as a 'double eagle') rewards 200,000 NG.

  • Chip In: Putting from off the green rewards a 1,000 NG.

  • Long Putt: A putt that goes in from a given length (15~20 yards) rewards an extra 200 NG.

  • Long Putt: A putt that goes in from a given length (20~25 yards) rewards an extra 500 NG.

  • Long Putt: A putt that goes in from an exceeding length (25.1+ yards) rewards an extra 1,000 NG.

  • Accurate Shot: Hitting exactly 0% on your 3rd click (accuracy click) rewards an accurate shot bonus of 100NG.

  • Nice Shot: One step better than an "Accurate Shot." If a 100% accurate shot (hit close to but doesnt have to be exactly the 100% marker and the 0% marker exactly) is made, a bonus of 200 NG is given.

  • Farthest Shot Renewed: If the tee shot exceeds the personal farthest tee shot a 1000 NG reward is given.

  • Hole Out Bonus: When a hole is completed, NG and EXP are awarded based on the player's level, hole score and the amount and level of other players. This varies depending on the number of players and the current level of the player, in addition to the nature of the hole.

Missions

The object of a mission is to have all golfers playing the round make a certain score (usually it's par or better) on a given hole. If all golfers fulfill the mission each one receives a prize. Missions occur randomly with each hole in a time period and are only available for rounds with two or more players.

Guilds

Guilds are limited when started, with very little function. As experience is earned, 10% will be translated into Guild Points or GP. When the GP gets to a certain number, the guild will "class up". When a "class-up" is accomplished, new functions are enabled such as guild chat, abilities to expel members, abilities to recruit more members, and abilities to promote a sub master. The classes are G, F, E, D, C, B, A, and S. G being the lowest. The class up process is designed to take an extensive amount of time and effort.

Chat Interface

The Chat Interface supports basic functions which you see in most MMORPG games.

  • General Chat - Used for talking to everyone at the same time in the Square. Also used to talk to the other players on your course during a game.

  • Private chat - Used for talking to an individual privately. You have to type the name of the individual before you can send a private message to them. Private messages can be sent from anywhere, even if the other individual isn't on the same field as you.

  • Guild Chat - Used for talking to guild members only.

Starting a Game

The waiting room is list of games currently in progress and games that haven't started yet. There are several options when in the waiting room:

  • Join a Game: By clicking the "join" button on a listed game, you can enter a created room.

  • Create a Game: By clicking "Create a Game" options are given to create a room. The options include Level restriction, course, game type, room name, player limit and password.

  • Join with Number: Allows you to enter a room number and automatically join it. If the game already has started, you will join in gallery mode, otherwise you'll enter the room as a participant.

  • Random Join: This will randomly join a room which is open or has available spots.

  • Show Open Rooms: This option will display only the open rooms or rooms which have spaces available.

  • Gallery Mode: This allows entering a game which is in progress. This is especially useful for the large tournaments. You can chat with the players whilst in gallery mode.

  • Game Types:

  • Stroke - Standard golf-scoring format where the objective is to achieve the lowest score possible. NG and EXP are awarded, with more depending on hole score and the number of players. In 2-4 player rounds the best round score wins NG based on the number of holes played:

  • Match (2 players required) - In this mode players shoot for the best hole score. The person with the best hole score wins the hole, and the person who wins more than 50% of the holes wins the round. No NG is awarded in this mode based on individual shots, however the round winner still receives the end-round NG bonus. EXP is awarded, with more going to the hole winner and less going to the hole loser. The round ends after someone wins more than the majority of the holes.

  • Scratch (2-4 players required) - Semi-Pro exclusive play mode that is somewhat similar to skins. No EXP or NG is awarded per hole, but at the end of the round the winner receives the total bet amount based on the margin of victory. For example, if golfer A beats golfer B by 2 strokes with the bet at 1000 NG, golfer A wins 2000 NG.

  • Skins (2-4 players required) - All players pay a specified amount per hole to put into a pot. The person with the best hole score wins the pot. If two or more players tie for the best hole score the pot is carried over to the next hole and gets larger until someone wins it. If there is a tie on the last hole of a round the pot is split between the top hole scores. EXP is awarded in this mode, and NG is awarded only when you win a hole.

  • Four-some Match (4 players required) - One of the two team formats in Shot Online. In this mode players are separated into teams of two and alternate shots using a team ball. The hole score is the same for both players on a hole-out with both team members picking up EXP and both members receive NG. End of Round winnings are split between both team members.

  • Four-ball Match (4 players required) - The other team play mode. This mode plays identically like stroke mode with all players using their own ball. The team score is a combination of both members individual scores. Players receive EXP and NG like Stroke mode. End of Round winnings are split between both team members.

  • Mastery - Semi-Pro exclusive play mode where use of the TAB key to line up shots is disabled. Cost is 1,000,000 NG plus course fee with an 18 hole round. NG is awarded on each hole with EXP accumulated. After the round the accumulated EXP is given a 30% bonus and awarded to the player.

Tournaments

Shot-online offers tournaments which can be played by a level. Fees on these tournaments range from 200,000 and upwards. Currently Shot-online is hosting a string of tournaments that are seasonal type. In addition to these seasonal tournaments Shot-Online also offers free tournaments from time to time. However, these are not regular golf tournaments, rather a high score contest over a specified period of time, because we do not have the ability to run proper ones.

COURSES

Course Description

Shot Online offers a wide variety in courses, each of which can be very challenging and hard to master but very enjoyable. Courses have different green fees, and playing them provides varying bonuses and experience points depending upon the difficulty.
  • Gleiger: This is the newest course to Shot-Online. It has the distance and difficulty of Abel Plena, also the difficulty of Cadeiger. Also taking place in the skies, players aim for the greens with a great view of a sunset.

  • Volcano: Set in a volcano with close to flat grey greens and grey fairways with tricky lies. The brewing lava and the smoke emitting from the lava will leave every player breathless.

  • Token Tado CC Nagoya: This course is based on a the real Token Tado CC Nagoya course located in between Gansai and Mieheyn in Japan. Enjoy the scenery and take in the beauty.

  • Cadeiger: A very short semi-pro only Shot-Online course but is difficult nonetheless. Set in the sky with high pillars and high and low elevations.

  • Sosori: Introduced in 2006. Known for its wide fairways and white dogwood trees.

  • Alfheim: Is a course for Shot-Online beginners and is also the easiest course in the game. Large fairways and greens promise new players a solid game if they start with a relaxed mindset. There are still some very challenging holes on this course, especially the long par 4 holes and the 'dogleg' holes.

  • Fensalir: Fensalir has narrow fairways and difficult holes; it's suitable for strategic players with course management skills. Because of its relatively low green fee and high experience rewards, this course is excellent for amateur players or even high-level beginners!

  • Gladsheim: Gladsheim is suitable overall for skilled amateur players. This is also the course used for the semi-pro qualifying test.

  • Hela: Don't let the charming rustic look fool you. Hela has numerous water hazards scattered through the course's holes. It is one of the most difficult courses in Shot-Online.

  • Midas Valley: Midas Valley is world-famous for its stunning vista. And you can play as the pros do, because this is a real live course in South Korea.

  • NamChon CC: With broad and easy-to-hit up and down fairway, Namchon CC is loved by a wide variety of players in South Korea - and in Shot-Online.

  • Forneus: Experience dangerous tropical beauty in Forneus, featuring well-placed archipelagos, palm trees galore, and of course, sun and surf.

  • Wattsu: This is real existing golf course in Hokkaido, Japan. The courses gorgeous outlay of nature and its beauty attracts many golfers but its tricky land form makes it suited for intermediate or above players

  • Rufus Arena: Feel the power of shifting desert sands and an array of obstacles in Rufus Arena. Players can make a par on this course, but don't expect an easy birdie!

  • Abel Plena: Named after the "Energizing Life force". This course is especially suitable for long and power drivers because of its extremely long distances. Pro exclusive course that brings you a new experience, playing in ancient structures and natural surroundings.

  • Karuizawa72 NorthC: It's not as easy as the other real courses of this game, with a narrow playing field and a possibility of some holes to go OB easily. Distances aren't really a problem, it require some good skill and to be attentive to the environment.

Greens Fee

For each game played, the user pays a small green fee. This fee is payed regardless of the amount of holes played.

  • Alfheim/Sosori/Random: 1,000

  • Fensalir/Namchon CC/Midas Valley : 2,000

  • Wattsu/Karuizawa/Volcano/Token Tado CC Nagoya : 3,000

  • Gladsheim : 4,000

  • Hela/Forneus : 5,000

  • Rufus Arena : 8,000

  • Abel Plena/Cadeiger/Gleiger : 10,000

STATISTICS

Handicap

A new character begins with a HDCP of +28. The HDCP can not go up, but only playing an 18 hole game will reduce it. After an 18 hole game is completed, the new HDCP will be the average of the score and the starting HDCP.

Every course keeps track of the handicap on that specific course. If 18 holes are played on a course, the new handicap will be registered for that course. This is required for semi-pro qualification. A handicap of -4 on a specific course is needed, independent of the overall handicap.

Player

As with most MMORPG games, Shot Online has a stat system. Stats are used to improve a character's abilities. Stat points are gained as a players level increases. These stat points can be distributed into the following:

  • Power: The Power of shots. Higher power means the ball travels over greater distances.

  • Impact: High impact gives the player more accuracy and it helps the player to compensate when 0% is missed on the 3rd click of the mouse. It also increases the height of a shot and increases your club's loft. Recommended (rumored) to stay at least equal to or just above your Power stat.

  • Stamina: How quickly or slowly the player fatigues. (Fatigue will increase as a game progresses minus the use of certain items preventing fatigue. It drops to zero when a "level-up" occurs, and may be reduced by resting on a bench in the Square between games, or by drinking nectar purchased in the square.) Some clubs purchased in-game also REQUIRE a certain Stamina number in order to utilize the club.

  • Skill: Back/Top/draw/fade shot can be performed with high skill points (rumored that usually +10 Skill will be sufficient.

CHARACTERS

THE ITEM MALL

Users of Shot Online can gain an advantage in terms of club selection by purchasing via credit card or Paypal items from the game and items sold on the site that are not sold within the game. Examples of site-exclusive items are tokens that multiply the amount of experience and NG per hole, stat-boosting clothing, and stat modifiers are just a few examples. In addition to that, the site sells the higher level golf clubs. When a person purchases a club through the Item Mall the person can use that club regardless of level. Since beginners cannot use additional in game clubs until level 21, it puts the beginner purchaser at a greater advantage.

One other thing to note is that the so called lucky boxes available for the item mall rarely contain anything of use. You will probably get a zodiac in them which is of no use to man nor beast.
