DETAILS Turner was around 31 years old, and a Private in the 1st Battalion, 60th Rifles (later the King's Royal Rifle Corps ) of the British Army during the Indian Mutiny , when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 19 June 1857 at Delhi , India , during a severe conflict with the enemy at night, Private Turner carried off on his shoulder, under heavy fire, a mortally wounded officer of the Indian Service. Private Turner himself was wounded by a sabre-cut in the right arm. His gallant conduct saved the officer from the fate of others, whose mangled remains were not recovered until the following day.
