Brewery Information

  Name Rogue Ales
  Location Newport , Oregon
Owner Jack Joyce, Rob Strasser, and Bob Woodell (independent)
  Opened 1988

Rogue Ales is an American Brewery founded in 1988 in Ashland , Oregon ; it was later re-located to Newport . Rogue is known for producing a wide variety of traditional and experimental ales, including collaborations with Chef Morimoto of '' Iron Chef '' fame.

The company has a wide range of beers and continues to produce new beers regularly. A key similarity to most of Rogue's beers is the who appears on the front of the bottle, usually in attire that is complementary to the name or the style of the beer.

BEERS

Brutal Bitter

While technically classified by most as an Extra Special Bitter , many people feel the “Brutal“ is more closely aligned with a strong IPA . In any case, it is an excellent example of a highly hopped American Microbrew. Favored by the locals of Newport.

Brutal Bitter was first brewed in 1996 for the 20th Anniversary of the Horse Brass Pub in Portland . Customer demand prompted Rogue to continue brewing Brutal for the Horse Brass as well as using it as Rogue's premier pour at the 1998 Oregon Brewers Festival . At the 1999 SpringFest in Portland, Oregon, Brutal Bitter was unscientifically voted the Peoples Choice--it received twice as many votes as the runner-up.

Chocolate Stout

Originally created for export to Japan , Chocolate Stout is a dark stout with a rich, bittersweet chocolate flavor. It was released for Valentine's Day in 2001 in a twenty-two ounce bottle for the US market.

Dead Guy Ale

Dead Guy Ale is, according to its bottle labeling, "gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us." This allusion to the Grateful Dead is apparently pure coincidence, as the ale was created as a private tap sticker for Casa U Betcha in Portland to celebrate the Mayan Day Of The Dead on November 1 ( All Souls Day ). The design was so popular that it was adopted as the label for the potent Maibock developed a few years later, which retains the name.

Dead Guy Ale is deep honey in color, and has a markedly malty aroma, as well as a hefty content of alcohol.

Hazel Nut Brown Nectar

The picture on this bottle resembles Tommy Lewis.

Mocha Porter

This porter is brewed with chocolate and an extra helping of hops, giving it a depth and complexity not often found in other porters. According to Rogue brewmaster John Maier in the documentary American Beer, this is his favorite beer, and the one that he spent most of his time and energy developing. Mocha Porter was once known as New Porter, in honor of the town of Newport, Oregon and home of Rogue Ales.

Shakespeare Stout

Shakespeare Stout is an American Stout . It is sweeter than an Irish Stout , but not as sweet as most Oatmeal or Milk stouts. It pours a dark ebony color with a small head, has a modestly thick mouth feel, and a very robust flavor with notes of chocolate and coffee. It also exhibits a distinct American Hop citrusy majou, which Irish stouts do not exhibit. The combination of Dead Guy Ale and Shakespeare Stout to form a black and tan is commonly referred to as a Dead Poet.

Morimoto Soba Ale

Soba (also known as Buckwheat ) is not a type of wheat but a member of the rhubarb family (a fruit, not a grain!) Soba has been a longtime staple of Japanese cuisine because of its nutritional value. Buckwheat is high in potassium, phosphorous, vitamin B (50 percent more than wheat) and protein, and its virtually fat-free. The fruits of buckwheat plant are like small beechnuts, which are milled to separate the edible groats from the dark brown hulls. The groats are then roasted and used more or less like a grain (a good example is Kasha). Morimoto Soba Ale is brewed with Roasted Buckwheat, Pale malt, Munich Malt, 13-17 Carastan Malt, and Crystal Hops. (Note, this beer contains Gluten.) The flavor is unique, toasty-nutty sensation with medium body and good hop bitterness.

Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale

Black Obi Soba is brewed with roasted buckwheat and malts providing a rich nut-laced flavor, while the Horizon, Sterling and Cascade hops blend to provide a refreshing zest.

Morimoto Imperial Pilsner

Brewed with four ingredients: 100% French Pilsner Malt, 100% Sterling Hops, Free Range Coastal Water and Czech Pilsner Yeast. Imperial Pilsner is golden in color with a dry hop floral aroma and intense hop bitterness supported by a big malty backbone.
