Robert William Trevor Key (born East Dulwich , London on 12 May , 1979 ) is an English Cricket er who plays for the England Cricket Team and Kent County Cricket Club .

Key played in the England side that won the Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in 1998, but Key only played his first Test Match in 2002 against India after Marcus Trescothick broke a thumb and Graham Thorpe withdrew from Test cricket as a result of personal problems. Key toured in Australia in 2002/3 and played at home against Zimbabwe in 2003, but he did not play Test cricket for England again until July 2004, after Key scored 1,000 First-class runs by 2 June and Mark Butcher sustained a Whiplash injury.

On 22 July , 2004 , playing against the West Indies at Lord's in his ninth Test, Key scored his maiden Test century, which became his maiden Test and first-class double century the Following Day . He was eventually out for 221.

In 2005 , he was named as one of the five Wisden Cricketers Of The Year by Wisden Cricketer's Almanack and was appointed as Kent Captain for the 2006 season.

Key is regularly the subject of predictable newspaper puns, rotating around the common themes of "Rob holds the key to..." or "Key unlocks door to..."

In 2007 Key was at the centre of contreversy for ball tampering in a pre season match against Nottinghamshire. Key admitted using sandpaper to try and get the ball to reverse swing but said it was only to help his young bowlers get practice.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/counties/kent/6551241.stm

Key also captained Kent to Twenty20 success in the 2007 season.
