is a franchise of
Fantasy Novel s by
Ryo Mizuno based around the work he originally created for a world called ''Forcelia'' for
Role-playing Game s. There have since been multiple
Manga ,
Anime and
Computer Game adaptations, several of which have been translated into
English . The plots generally follow the conventions and structure of the
Role-playing Game systems including
Dungeons & Dragons ,
Record Of Lodoss War Companion , and
Sword World RPG , being based around a party of several characters of distinct
Types undertaking a specific
Quest .
At the beginning, Group SNE pioneered a new book genre entitled ''replay''. Replays are not novels but transcripts of RPG sessions, to both hold the interest of readers, and convey the events that took place during the games run. It was the start of "Record of Lodoss War".
The first replay, ''Record of Lodoss War'', is a
Replay of
Dungeons & Dragons that has been published in ''Comptiq'' magazine since
1986 . Ryo Mizuno was the Dungeon Master (DM) at the time the origin games were played, and recorded the sessions. Replays have proven to be popular, even to those who do not play
Role-playing Game s but are fans of fiction (including fantasy fiction). Similar to
Light Novel s, many characters and parties in replays have become popular as characters of
Anime . An example of such a character is the female elf
Deedlit in ''Record of Lodoss War.'' Her player is
Science Fiction novelist
Hiroshi Yamamoto (playing a character in an RPG who is of the other gender from the player is not particularly uncommon, especially among experienced players).
Later, these replays were novelized as Japanese fantasy novels of an early date.
The ''Record of Lodoss War'' setting was offered to
TSR , the owners of ''D&D'' at that time (TSR went bankrupt in 1997 and was bought by
Wizards Of The Coast ), but due to the policies of senior management at the time, it was believed that the setting would not sell well and it was not purchased.
The earliest novels were published by
Kadokawa Shoten beginning in 1988. They are paperback series in . The first novel, ''The Grey Witch'' (灰色の魔女 ''Haiiro no Majo'') forms the basis for the manga series of the same name, and the first eight episodes of the ''Record of Lodoss War''
OVA . The second, was also adapted in manga form, and as a 4 CD radio drama. The final five episodes of the OVA series are based on the story told in across the third and fourth novels, . Mizuno continues writing Lodoss novels to this date, in addition to creating other series, including the
Sci-fi series
Starship Operators which has recently been adapted into anime form by
J.C.Staff .
The following is a timeline of the events as they take place in the original events surrounding ''Record of Lodoss War'', and is derived from the replays and manga. All events are measured on the "NRC" (New Royal Calendar) as used on the continent of Alecrast.
