Although the series was based in South Yorkshire , it was actually filmed in the town of Ilkeston in Derbyshire . The cast included the likes of James Nesbitt , John Thomson , Lesley Sharp , Ricky Tomlinson and Debra Stephenson . Another cast member, Marsha Thomason , found fame in the U.S. , starring in the show '' Las Vegas ''. The theme song to the series was written and recorded by Alison Moyet .
