Paula Aboud is an American politician from Arizona , currently serving in the Arizona State Senate . An activist for the Tucson Democratic Party , she was appointed to the State Senate by the Pima County Board Of Supervisors on 3 January 2006 following the resignation of Senator (now Congresswoman ) Gabrielle Giffords . She represents the 28th legislative district, centering on Tucson . One of Arizona's few openly Gay Or Lesbian public officials, she was elected in her own right in 2006. In the Democratic primary election on September 12, she saw off a challenge from State Rep. Ted Downing and faced no Republican opponent in the general election. Her campaign won the backing of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund .1 She is a member of three standing committees, Appropriations, Higher Education and Health.
