The Pascack Valley Line is a Commuter Rail line operated by New Jersey Transit and Metro-North Railroad that runs north from Hoboken, New Jersey through Bergen County and into Rockland County, New York , terminating at Spring Valley . The line is named for the Pascack Valley region that it passes through in northern Bergen County. The line parallels the Pascack Brook for some distance. CURRENT OPERATIONS The line only offers commuter-oriented off-peak and peak hour service, Monday to Friday. Morning trains run south from Spring Valley to Hoboken, and in the evening head back in the opposite direction. Its total run is 31 miles (50 km), of which the northernmost six miles (10 km) are in New York . The entire line is owned by NJ Transit , but the Pearl River and Nanuet Stations, as well as the right-of-way from the New York border to Spring Valley, is leased to Metro-North Railroad. Metro-North Railroad owns the Spring Valley station. The line is limited to predominant-traffic (peak-direction) commuter service since it has only one track for the majority of its run. Occasionally, '', July 26 , 2007 . Accessed July 28 , 2007 . "Off-peak" trains precede the morning peak trains and come both before and after the afternoon and evening peak trains. The first train of the day leaves Spring Valley at 5:05 am and arrives in Hoboken at 6:14 am; the first peak train leaves Spring Valley at 5:54 am and comes into Hoboken at 7:07 am. The last train going to Hoboken, which is a peak train, leaves Spring Valley at 8:06 am and arrives in Hoboken at 9:18 am. Going away from Hoboken, the first train leaves at 1:56 pm and arrives at Spring Valley at 3:09 pm. The first peak train to leave Hoboken does so at 4:39 pm and arrives at Spring Valley at 5:59 pm; the last peak train leaves Hoboken at 6:55 pm and arrives in Spring Valley at 8:04 pm. The last train of the day, an off-peak train, leaves Hoboken at 10:55 pm and arrives in Spring Valley at 12:05 am. {Link without Title} HISTORY The line was originally chartered as the Hackensack And New York Railroad in 1856. It later became the New Jersey And New York Railroad , which was bought by the Erie Railroad in 1896. The New Jersey and New York Railroad continued to exist as an Erie subsidiary until the 1960 merger that created the Erie Lackawanna Railroad . The line used to continue north of Spring Valley to Haverstraw, New York . This portion of the line has been abandoned and most of the Right of Way has been sold off. Part of the line (between Spring Valley and Nanuet) was once part of the main Erie Railroad line from Piermont, New York to Buffalo, New York . A branch line to Lodi, New Jersey was discontinued many years ago. Almost no trace of this branch line exists today.
