Information About

Paige Patterson

  OR July 2007

He started preaching while still in his teens. Patterson received his B.A. from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and a Th.M. and Ph.D. of theology studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary . He held several Pastorates before becoming president of the Criswell Center for Biblical Studies (later called the Criswell College ) in Dallas , Texas. His profile was raised by his connection through the college with Dr W.A. Criswell of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. After 17 years he became President of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina (1992-2003). Patterson was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in both 1998 and 1999. He has lectured and preached extensively and authored and edited many books and journals, mostly within the confines of Southern Baptist life. {Link without Title}

Patterson is best known for his leading of the conservative resurgence within the SBC during the late 1970s and 1980s. Recognizing that the SBC president could (albeit through a lengthy process) influence the direction of the SBC (which Patterson and other conservatives believed was taking a liberal track in opposition to the Christian Scriptures), starting in 1979, Patterson led Southern Baptist's to elect convention Presidents, beginning with Adrian Rogers. Patterson and his supporters were able to win these elections by organizing hundreds of churches to send messengers (as many as 40,000) who were committed to voting for the conservative candidates.

The conservatives that Patterson led were known for their tenacity, using the SBC structure to further the cause. By the time Patterson took over as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX, the conservative leadership required that all faculty sign documents stating their allegiance to Southern Baptist theology, most notably, the ''Baptist Faith and Message''.

Patterson has attracted interest because of his stance on the role of women in churches and related areas such as the academic training of ministers. According to Patterson, the "the highest and noblest calling of God" for women is that of "mother and grandmother."[http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=19402] Additionally, Patterson's interpretation of the Bible includes "an assignment from God, in this case that a woman not be involved in a teaching or ruling capacity over men."[http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=19402] This stance was highlighted in a case involving Prof. Sheri Klouda, a Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary professor hired prior to Patterson's arrival. Southwestern Seminary has a number of female faculty members. Though Paige Patterson's wife, Dorothy, is now the only female faculty member listed among the School of Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, her teaching role is limited by the seminary to women.[http://www.swbts.edu/faculty/index.cfm]

Patterson has also become known for his enjoyment of African hunting expeditions. His home and office display rare and exotic animals that he reports killing and as a result of this activity he is an invited speaker at Christian sportsman banquets and to groups which use the Bible to support gunowners' rights throughout the United States. More than 2,000 men have declared allegiance to Christ in these events. {Link without Title}
