The store started as a surf shop in
1980 under a different name, selling surfboards and wax. The first mall store opened in
1981 in
Santa Monica Place in
Santa Monica, California . By
1987 , they had a total of 21 stores. In
1993 , the company was operating 60 stores. More recently, the company has opened up to more styles than just surfwear, adding sweatshirts, jeans, accessories, and shoes often associated with skateboarding culture to keep up with current trends. Popular clothing brands sold at the store include
