Ovingham is a Parish and Village in the Tyne Valley in south Northumberland . It lies on the River Tyne 16 kilometres (10 miles) east of Hexham with neighbours Prudhoe , Ovington , Wylam and Stocksfield . St Mary church has a late Saxon tower and fine 13th century Lancet Window s. In the porch is a stone slab commemorating Thomas Bewick who is buried in the churchyard. Ovingham Bridge , which crosses the River Tyne , was built in 1883 . The steel tubes are marked Dorman Long Middlesbrough , the firm which designed and built the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Tyne Bridge .. For such a small place, Ovingham has made quite a contribution to popular music in recent years. The punk-rock band China Drum formed in Ovingham in 1989, and more recently Rob Barker of Newcastle Upon Tyne -based Post-rock act Peace Burial at Sea grew up in the village.
