The New York Mets (short for '''New York Metropolitans''') are a Major League Baseball team based in Flushing in the New York City Borough of Queens . The Mets play in the East Division of the National League . They are one of two major league franchises in the City of New York, the other being the New York Yankees . The Mets have won two World Series Championships in their 46-year history, the first in 1969 and the second in 1986 . FRANCHISE HISTORY in 1957, the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants abandoned New York for California , leaving the largest city in the United States without a National League franchise. Two years later, on July 27 , 1959 , attorney William Shea announced the formation of a third major baseball league, the Continental League .
