Montrose County is the 16th most extensive of the 64 Counties of the State Of Colorado of the United States . The county population was 33,432 at U.S. Census 2000 .1 The county was named for its County Seat , the City Of Montrose . The Montrose Micropolitan Statistical Area comprises Montrose County.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 5,808 Km&2 (2,243 Mi&2 ). 5,803 km&2 (2,241 mi&2) of it is land and 5 km&2 (2 mi&2) of it (0.09%) is water.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census &2 of 2000, there were 33,432 people, 13,043 households, and 9,312 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 6/km&2 (15/mi&2). There were 14,202 housing units at an average density of 2/km&2 (6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 89.96% White , 0.31% Black or African American , 1.02% Native American , 0.42% Asian , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 5.74% from Other Races , and 2.49% from two or more races. 14.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 13,043 households out of which 32.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% were Married Couples living together, 8.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% were non-families. 24.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county the population was spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $35,234, and the median income for a family was $40,849. Males had a median income of $29,945 versus $21,423 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $17,158. About 8.90% of families and 12.60% of the population were below the Poverty Line , including 16.50% of those under age 18 and 9.80% of those age 65 or over.
