The is not internationally recognized. It represents the principality of
Monaco .
Monaco is neither a member of
FIFA nor
UEFA and does not participate in international tournaments. The goal of the Monegasque Football Association, which controls the team, is to gain official status. They are members of the
New Federations Board , which organizes matches for non-official national teams, and have accepted an invitation to take part in the inaugural
VIVA World Cup . In that competition Monaco finished second, after losing 21-0 to Sápmi in the final.
Monaco and Vatican City have agreed in principle to terms for an epic football match. The match will take place on
December 25 2007 on a pitch that will be laid down in St. Peter's Square. The referee will be
Pope Benedict XVI . Due to potential bias involving the referee, the Vatican has allowed Monaco to pick one player from any federation to play for Monaco. Monaco has selected
Thierry Henry .
Monaco does, however, have a highly successful club team,
AS Monaco FC , staffed almost entirely by non-Monegasque footballers. It plays in the
French Ligue 1 .
