Lillard was born in in Pasadena, California , with fellow actor Paul Rudd , and later, the theater school Circle in the Square in New York City .

In the 1990s , Lillard dated actresses Rose McGowan , Neve Campbell and Christine Taylor , prior to his marriage to Heather Helms in 2000. They have two children together: Addison Grace and Macey Lyn.
