Bannister's book - ''Positively George Street'' - about his time in a band during the height of the " Dunedin Sound " movement was published in 1999.

He has a PhD in Film, TV and Media Studies from the University Of Auckland , having been a student there 1998 - 2003 . His thesis was titled ''White Man's Soul: pakeha masculinities in popular music of New Zealand / Aotearoa''.

He is now working at the Waikato Institute of Technology (WINTEC) in the School of Media Arts.
