Matthew Baillie




The brother of Poet ress Joanna Baillie , he was a pupil of his anatomist John Hunter , his uncle. He was educated at Hamilton Academy , the University Of Glasgow , and obtained his MD from the University Of Oxford in 1789. He became Fellow of the Royal College Of Physicians in 1790, and specialised in Morbid Anatomy .

His 1793 book, ''The Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body,'' is considered the first systematic study of pathology, and the first publication in English on pathology as a separate subject. Baillie died of Tuberculosis in 1823 at the age of 62. He is buried in Duntisbourne , Gloucestershire.
