Mark Kerry




Mark Kerry (born August 4 , 1959 ) is a former Australia n backstroke swimmer of the 1970s and 1980s, who won three medals in Olympics competition, including a gold in the 4x100 m medley relay at the 1980 Moscow Olympics .

Kerry's international career appeared to be in disarray when along with two teammates, Mark Tonelli and Joe Dixon , he was expelled from the Australian team for the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton , Canada after a disciplinary breach at a training camp in Honolulu, Hawaii . However, he was again selected for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. Along with Neil Brooks , Mark Tonelli and Peter Evans , Kerry swam the backstroke leg, with the Australians finishing 0.22 s ahead of the Soviet Union to claim the gold. After being eliminated in the 100 m backstroke heats, Kerry used the stirring relay victory to lift him to a surprise bronze medal in the 200 m backstroke behind the Hungarian duo of Sandor Wladar and Zoltan Verraszto .

Kerry and Evans returned in 1984 to the Los Angeles Olympics , combining with Mark Stockwell and Glenn Buchanan in the 4x100 m medley relay. They were no match for the American team, which was absent due to a boycott at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. He also qualified for the final of the 100 m backstroke, where he came fifth.
