Emmert, who is a University of Washington alumnus, grew up in Fife, Washington , one of two brothers. He attended Fife High School . He afterwards married his high school sweetheart, DeLaine Smith, at Fife Presbyterian Church, and they have two children, Stephen and Jennifer. Emmert held faculty and administrative positions at the University Of Colorado from 1985 to 1992 , then spent four years at Montana State University . There he became Provost and Vice President for academic affairs. In 1995 he moved to the University Of Connecticut . In 1999 he left Connecticut for LSU. At LSU, Emmert spearheaded the hiring of football coach Nick Saban , who led the Tigers to Southeastern Conference championships in 2001 and 2003, and the BCS national championship in 2003. Emmert was also instrumental in hiring Tyrone Willingham to revive Washington's sagging football program in 2005 . EXTERNAL LINKS
