Manapouri is a small town in Southland / Fiordland , in the southwest corner of the South Island of New Zealand . It is at the edge of Fiordland National Park on the eastern shore of Lake Manapouri , close to its outflow into the Waiau River . A Tourist Boat service operates from the town. Manapouri is a 20 minutes drive from Te Anau . It is the gateway to both Doubtful and Dusky Sounds and the starting point for local walking tracks. Manapouri is a popular destination during the summer months when visitors come to soak up the sunshine and enjoy Lake Manapouri’s clear waters. Commercial services include a petrol station, cafe/shop, bar/bistro and numerous accommodations. There is a large hydro-electric power station called Manapouri Power Station at West Arm on Lake Manapouri. Most of the power serves the Tiwai Point Aluminum Smelter. EXTERNAL LINKS
