Madawaska County ( 2001 population 35,611), also known as the "'''New Brunswick Panhandle'''", is located in northwestern New Brunswick , Canada . Over 90% of the county's population speaks French . Forestry is the major industry in the county. HISTORY The area was named after the First Nations Madoueskaks tribe, that inhabited the whole of the Saint John River valley from Grand Falls, New Brunswick to Sept-Îles, Quebec . The earliest European settlers were the Acadian who moved to the area to escape the British. The area was ground-zero of the Aroostook War , a border dispute led by businessman and political activist John Baker .
