M-46 is an east-west highway between Muskegon and Port Sanilac , reaching Lake Michigan and Lake Huron . It nearly bisects the Lower Peninsula Of Michigan latitudinally.

Except for the uncharacteristic north-south segment that corresponds with the US 131 freeway between Cedar Springs and Howard City it is practically a due east-west surface highway, little of it divided. For motorists north of the Grand Rapids - Lansing - Flint corridor it is a major highway, in part because Saginaw is the largest city on its route.
