M-42 is an east-west highway in northwestern lower Michigan . Along its route, M-42 begins in Manton and ends north of Lake City.

In the 1930's, M-42 turned north at Sherman , going through Buckley , Chum's Corners , Traverse City , and stopping at the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula at the Old Mission Lighthouse . This stretch of road is now part of M-37 . In 1951, the only remaining gravel stretch of M-42 from M-66 to Manton was paved.

In June 2007, the stretch of M-42 between M-37 and US 131 was turned back to local control scaling it's length back from 25.76 miles to just 9.52 miles.
