China paid tribute to many states and confederations:
Tibet during Tang Dynasty: in the case of Tang-era China/Tibet trade, each side routinely described the trade goods which it received as "tribute," and those which it exported as "gifts." If such accounts are to be admissible in terms of showing Tibet to have paid tribute, they also should be accepted as evidence of China's vassalage.
