There are, at present, a number of Communist Parties active in various countries across the world, and a number who used to be active. The formation of communist parties in various countries was first initiated by the formation of the Communist Third International by the Russia n Bolsheviks . Undoubtedly the most important of these parties were those of the Soviet Union and the People's Republic Of China .

Some communist parties have names such as Socialist Party, Socialist Workers Party, Workers' Party, etc. The parties on this list are mostly those that were aligned with either Moscow or Beijing during the Cold War and their offshoots. Groups originating in the Trotskyist tradition are not included in the listing.

RULING PARTIES


The Communist parties in power in China , Cuba , North Korea , Laos and Vietnam operate according to the concept of the Dictatorship Of The Proletariat , which is, according to Marxist-Leninist ideology, the period in between Capitalism and the higher phase of Communism . During this revolutionary period, the Vanguard Party of the Proletariat (i.e. the Communist party) holds a monopoly on state power, which is the ideological reason why political opposition is typically not allowed in these states.

On the other hand, in Moldova and Cyprus the ruling Communist parties do not consider a revolution to have occurred by them being elected to power and thus operate according to the norms of a Multi-party System . In Nepal , where there has just been a long civil war that toppled the old monarchy, the ruling Communist parties participate in a multi-party coalition government, called the Seven Party Alliance , which includes the social-democratic Nepali Congress party. Finally, some parties participate as junior partners in ruling coalitions, such as in Brazil , Bulgaria , Italy , South Africa , Sri Lanka , Syria , Ukraine and Uruguay .
