Information About

Keg Stand

Keg stand (sometimes known as''' 'getting vertical' ''') is often considered a Drinking ritual using a Beer Keg , but it is not always competitive. Sometimes, keg stands are merely a form of enjoyment for participants. It is usually done in a College setting. An American college student interviewed by '' Time Magazine '' defined a keg stand as, "two friends suspend you by your ankles over a keg, and you guzzle as much cheap beer as quickly as you can."1 Onlookers generally count out loud the number of seconds the person drinks for before having to stop. If in a competitive setting, an agreement is made beforehand about the pressure of the beer coming out. The general pressure setting is for it to be like a " Firehose ", or a high-pressure stream. A low pressure pour from the keg can yield highly distorted results.

Leaders of character that wish to complete a keg stand never do so in a profane manner and oftentimes quit before they are intoxicated. These leaders realize that in their setting, a keg stand is not a drinking game, but an activity which builds unit cohesiveness.2

A newer version of this is the can stand, which is done the same way as the keg stand. Person is held upside down and sucks the beer out of the can with a straw while holding themself up by their hands.

PROCEDURE

#The person puts both hands on the Keg .
#Friends pick up the person by the legs and tip them upward, as if they were doing a Handstand on the keg.
#The person wraps their lips around the tap, opens it, and drinks.
#The surrounding audience and awaiting participants chant the number of seconds for which the person is drinking.
#The person shakes their leg to signal to friends when they can't drink anymore and need to get down.
#Repeat.

INVERTED KEG STAND

A variation of the keg stand, is the inverted keg stand, which is the same thing but the participant's head and body faces up torwards the ceiling, instead of down. This tends to result in more of a blood rush to the head, and can increase the sensation of dizziness, yielding to a lower drinking time.

KEG DIVE

Another variation of the keg stand is the keg dive. The participant rushes toward the keg from 10-20 feet away and dives at about 5 feet away. He or she is caught by four friends, two on each side of the participant's path to the keg, and tilted upside down as another person operates the hose. A normal keg stand follows. The keg dive is especially popular in Maryland .

MULTIPLE PERSON

Another variation of the keg stand is to utilize a Multispout Keg Tap like those offered from Octopus Tap. This allows up to 4 people do a simultaneous keg stand and really tests the coordination of the participants with pumping and balancing of the beer patrons
