He started his career at Liverpool F.C. , coming through the junior ranks at Anfield, taking the place of Bob Paisley when making his first team debut in a goal less draw at home to Bolton Wanderers in March 1953 . After making twelve first team appearances as a Central Defender, he left for Shrewsbury Town in July 1954 , for whom he made 237 league appearances.
