Jean Du Vergier De Hauranne

He was the spiritual director and the Confessor of the Convent of Port-Royal , which under his leadership from 1633 to 1636 became a center of Jansenism. He studied religion with Cornelius Jansen , and later became a regular correspondent with Jansen, urging him to prepare his book ''Augustinus'', the source of the Jansenist teachings.

After the death of his friend Bérulle, he became the leader of a group of devotees, allied with the Parlement of Paris , which brought him into conflict with Cardinal Richelieu . Richelieu caused him to be imprisoned at Vincennes in 1638 , and he was not freed until after the Cardinal died, and died shortly thereafter.
