The ''Hiei'' (比叡) was an 1878 armored corvette of the Imperial Japanese Navy . She was designed by Edward James Reed and built in Great Britain . She was delivered to Japan by a British crew, with the future admiral Togo Heihachiro onboard, who had just completed 6 years of study in Great Britain. Statistics: Length: 220 ft Displacement: 3718 tons (fully loaded) Speed: 14 knots Compliment: 314 Armament: 3 x 6.7" Krupp BL, 6 x 5.9" Krupp BL, 4 x 1 pdr, 7 x MGs, 2 x 14" TT (AW) Armor: 4.5" Waterline Belt History: Damaged in the Battle of Yalu River (1894). Served on Surveying Duties until 1 April, 1911 when she was stricken from the lists. NOTE: BL = Breech Loading, MG = Machine Guns, TT = Torpedo Tubes, and AW = Above Water Mounts |
