Irish () is a Celtic Language of the Goidelic Branch spoken in Ireland . Although once spoken across the whole of the island, it is currently a minority vernacular in Ireland, spoken in specific communities and most particularly in the officially-recognised Gaeltacht , which exists in six separate communities around the Republic Of Ireland . It is Constitutionally upheld as the national and first official language of the Republic Of Ireland , and it is an official language of the European Union . It is also an officially recognised minority language in Northern Ireland .
