Iola is the County Seat for Allen County. Iola is famous for its very large courthouse square.


HISTORY

Planned in 1859, the first development of Iola occurred in 1860. In 1865, Iola became the county
seat.

An economic boom from natural gas began around 1895 and resulted in a surge in population and industry.
In 1910 , the population was 9,032.


GEOGRAPHY


Iola is located at (37.922651, -95.400367).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 10.9 Km&2 (4.2 Mi&2 ). 10.9 km&2 (4.2 mi&2) of it is land and 0.24% is water.

It is situated on the Neosho River with important natural gas fields in the vicinity.

Iola is at the junction of US Route 54 (Madison Street) and US Route 169 .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 6,302 people, 2,590 households, and 1,590 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 578.0/km&2 (1,497.0/mi&2). There were 2,885 housing units at an average density of 264.6/km&2 (685.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.72% White , 2.82% African American , 0.70% Native American , 0.22% Asian , 0.73% from Other Races , and 1.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.81% of the population.

There were 2,590 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were Married Couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,219, and the median income for a family was $37,795. Males had a median income of $26,407 versus $19,407 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $14,741. About 14.0% of families and 18.6% of the population were below the Poverty Line , including 26.1% of those under age 18 and 12.0% of those age 65 or over.
