Il mondo della luna (''The World in the Moon'') is an Opera Buffa by Joseph Haydn with a libretto by Carlo Goldoni , first performed at Eszterháza , Hungary on 3 August , 1777 . It was written for the wedding celebrations of Count Nikolaus Esterházy, the younger son of Haydn's patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy . New Grove , online edition, article "Joseph Haydn". Copyright 2007 by Oxford University Press. Goldoni's libretto had previously been set by four other composers. It is sometimes known by its German title '''Die Welt Auf Dem Monde'''.


SYNOPSIS


Act I

Ecclitico, a false astronomer, seeks to free Clarice and Flaminia, as well as their maid, Lisetta, from their over-protective father Buonafede, so that they might marry the husbands of their choosing, which are (respectivley) Ecclitco, the cavalier Ernesto, and his servant Cecco.


Act II

Buonafede is drugged, taken to Ecclitico's garden, and tricked into thinking that he is on the moon. Once here, Cecco appears as the emperor of the Moon, with Ernesto as his servant. The women now join the men, who are all now engaged, before Buonafede realizes that he had been tricked.


Act III

The three couples are married, eventually with Buonafede's consent.
