HISTORY Public Statistics in France before INSEE INSEE was preceded by several organizations responsible for the production of public statistics. In . In 1840 it was renamed ''SGF'' or ''General Statistics of France'' (French: ''Statistique '''g'''énérale de la '''F'''rance''). Under the direction of Lucien March , the SGF expanded its activities.
