Hot Chip are an English Electro-pop band. They have released two studio albums. The first, ''Coming On Strong'', was well received by the dance music press but failed to reach a mainstream audience. Their second album, however, ''The Warning'' was awarded the title Album of the Year by Mixmag and voted the fourth best album of 2006 by NME Magazine.

HISTORY

Hot Chip formed in 2000; some of the members had already been friends before the formation. Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard first met at Elliott Secondary School in Putney , where they claim to have had an impromptu wrestling match on the school playground. They went on to become good friends and began making music together at the age of 17.

After years of self-releasing records, they signed with Moshi Moshi in 2003. Their debut LP '' Coming On Strong '' was released in 2004. They soon started working on their second album and in the meantime they signed a US record deal with the Dance-Punk label DFA Records who re-released their debut album in late 2005.

In 2006 Hot Chip released their second album, '', 2007 .

The band is also well-known for their live shows, because they often reinvent their songs on stage, creating a completely different sound to what might be the official version. Recent festival appearances include Glastonbury , Sónar , Benicassim , Electric Picnic , Bestival , Lovebox , the Reading And Leeds Festivals , the Summer Sundae festival and the Big Day Out and Splendor In The Grass (2007) in Australia.

They released also a DJ Kicks compilation in 2007, which was accompanied by a new song called "My Piano", also released as a 12" .

At the moment, the band are mixing their third studio album, which is tentatively titled remix on the B-Side. The band first planned to release the album in 2007 but is now due for release in February 2008.

MEMBERS

Alexis Taylor

Taylor provides vocals and some percussion, and plays keyboards and guitar in Hot Chip. He is influenced by, amongst others, Prince . When traveling on the London Underground or bus, he often taps new lyrics into his mobile phone as a Text Message .

Taylor studied English at Jesus College, Cambridge between 1999 and 2002, during which time Hot Chip played a variety of gigs (with various line-ups) around Cambridge's live music venues.

As well as performing solo from Hot Chip at three different live shows, Taylor has also contributed to folk group The Memory Band , playing various instruments in early live shows and contributing vocals for currently unreleased material. Additionally, Taylor is also working on an album with Scritti Politti frontman Green Gartside .

Taylor is also married.

Joe Goddard

Joe Goddard is the vocalist and synthesizer operator for Hot Chip, as well as providing some percussion. He is also responsible for much of Hot Chip's home studio production. When Goddard was 12, he met bandmates Alexis Taylor and Owen Clarke at secondary school. Goddard became very good friends with Taylor and they eventually started making music. Goddard grew up listening to Hip Hop records in the early 1990s and some big influences are Souls Of Mischief and Madlib .

He and Taylor write the lyrics of Hot Chip songs.

Owen Clarke

Owen Clarke plays the guitar and synthesizer for Hot Chip live shows. He is responsible for some of the band's guitar and keyboard riffs, on songs like 'No Fit State'. His playing style, which features in the recordings as well as the live shows, is viewed as unique and greatly admired by many.

He is also responsible for much of Hot Chip's design and illustration work, including the strange keyboard that features on the cover of 'Coming on Strong' and the famous primary coloured blocks associated with 'The Warning' artwork.

Al Doyle

Al "Do-It" Doyle (also known as MC Quantisizit) plays the guitar and synthesizer for Hot Chip. He also contributed backing vocals for the song "Colours" on ''The Warning''. Generally he is willing and able to play anything that he can lay his hands on, leading to his nickname Al "Do-It" (homonymous to "I'll do it"). He has a background as a classical cellist, and plays cello on the track "Reasons" and 12-String on "I Wish I Wish" and "The Light" by folk group The Memory Band .

Doyle is behind some of Hot Chip's remixes. This includes reworks of bands such as MIA , Mattafix , Placebo , Radio 4 , Battle and Jim Noir . As MC Quantisizit, Doyle "toasted" over the Hot Chip remix of SIA.

Coincidentally, he attended the same school as Ricky Wilson , lead singer of the Kaiser Chiefs .

He is playing guitar, keyboards and percussion in LCD Soundsystem on their 2007 tour, replacing Phil Mossman.

Felix Martin

Felix Martin programs and operates drum machines for Hot Chip during their live shows. He usually operates an Elektron Machinedrum and an AKAI MPC1000. He runs a studio in London with Al Doyle, from where he works on some of the many Hot Chip remixes, alongside a variety of other projects. He has programmed drum machines and played other instruments which can be heard on the various Hot Chip recordings.
