Information About

Henry Prescott

Prescott joined the Royal Navy in 1796 and served in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic Wars . He was appointed governor of Newfoundland in 1834.

Prescott had no previous experience as a governor and the turbulent times in Newfoundland coupled with the behaviour of the House Of Assembly caused him to submit his resignation in January 1839 . It was not accepted. He stayed on for another two years and resigned a second time in May 1841. Prescott then returned to naval life.

Prescott Street in St. John's is so named for Henry Prescott.
