Haworth is a Borough in Bergen County , New Jersey , United States . As of the United States 2000 Census , the borough population was 3,390.

Haworth was formed by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 24 , 1904 , from portions of both Dumont and Harrington Township ."The Story of New Jersey's Civil Boundaries: 1606-1968", John P. GEOGRAPHY

Haworth is located at (40.960118, -73.988773).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 6.1 Km&2 (2.4 Mi&2 ). 5.1 km&2 (2.0 mi&2) of it is land and 1.0 km&2 (0.4 mi&2) of it (16.95%) is water.

As of the Census of 2000, there were 3,390 people, 1,134 households, and 970 families residing in the borough. The Population Density was 667.8/km&2 (1,732.3/mi&2). There were 1,146 housing units at an average density of 225.8/km&2 (585.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.94% White , 1.21% African American , 9.20% Asian , 0.74% from Other Races , and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.71% of the population.

There were 1,134 households out of which 44.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.7% were Married Couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.4% were non-families. 12.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.25.

In the borough the population was spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $101,836, and the median income for a family was $112,500. Males had a median income of $89,476 versus $49,643 for females. The Per Capita Income for the borough was $45,615. About 1.8% of families and 2.0% of the population were below the Poverty Line , including 2.4% of those under age 18 and 1.3% of those age 65 or over.


GOVERNMENT


Local government

Haworth is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey government, with a mayor and a six-member Borough Council. The mayor serves a four-year term of office. Council Members serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year.

Each January 1st, the Borough has a reorganization meeting, at which time each Council member is assigned a portfolio as chairman, and two other Council members are assigned as a committee. This allows a three-member council team to coordinate research activities, review budgets, personnel, and liaison with departments, commissions, committees, and vendors and contractors, to arrive at a plan to present to the entire council if action is required. EDUCATION

The Haworth Public Schools serve 513 students in grades K through 8.

Public school students in grades 9-12 attend Northern Valley Regional High School At Demarest in Demarest , which serves students from Closter , Demarest and Haworth. The high school is part of the Northern Valley Regional High School District , which also serves students from Harrington Park , Northvale , Norwood and Old Tappan at Northern Valley Regional High School At Old Tappan .

POINTS OF INTEREST


  • Haworth Country Club is a private club, featuring 18 holes of Golf . Like White Beeches, Haworth has been host to U.S. Open sectional qualifiers. Officially opened in 1965, the original course was designed by designer Toscana Filenti. In 1997, Haworth obtained full ownership of the Country Club's land from the local water company. In 2000, renowned designer Robert Trent Jones, Jr. redesigned the course.
