Hamilton Grammar School




Hamilton Grammar School is a secondary school serving the town of Hamilton and other areas of South Lanarkshire .

Situated in central Hamilton, Scotland, it can trace its history back to the year 1588. For most of its existence it was known as Hamilton Academy.

The introduction of comprehensive schooling in the early 1970s led to its merging with St. John's Grammar School, becoming a - 01-12 . Retrieved on 2007 - 08-11 .

Among famous people educated at the school are economist (Sir) Alexander Cairncross , politician Margo McDonald, novelist Robin Jenkins, product designer Philip Ross (SafeHinge) and pioneer photographer James Craig Annan.

The school gave its name to Hamilton Academical F.C. , the football club, which was founded in 1874 by the Rector and pupils.

The current Hamilton Grammar building was originally built in 1913. The building underwent an £8 million improvement in 1995. The original building was retained and fully renovated, with an additional building extension attached to rear. The new building contains laboratory facilities for the science departments, a workshop for technical subjects and kitchens for the home economics department. In addition to this, a fully fitted fitness suite is incorporated into the basement of the school.

In 2004, a communicational disorders unit was added to the school.
There is a new Physical Education hall being built at the rear end of the school starting in June 2008 and is to be finished by May 2009. This is to replace the old Physical Eduaction department which is at the back of St John's Primary School, which is being rebuilt.

A 2006 playground brawl involving 30-40 pupils, many armed with batons, sticks, golf clubs and bricks,
