DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census &2 of 2000, there were 23,456 people, 9,071 households, and 6,694 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 21/km&2 (55/mi&2). There were 11,924 housing units at an average density of 11/km&2 (28/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 93.63% White , 0.27% Black or African American , 0.46% Native American , 0.23% Asian , 0.26% Pacific Islander , 3.76% from Other Races , and 1.39% from two or more races. 7.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 9,071 households out of which 30.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% were Married Couples living together, 8.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% were non-families. 22.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 2.96. In the county the population was spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 103.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.30 males. The median income for a household in the county was $35,140, and the median income for a family was $38,863. Males had a median income of $29,198 versus $21,070 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $17,147. About 9.30% of families and 12.50% of the population were below the Poverty Line , including 12.60% of those under age 18 and 16.90% of those age 65 or over. HISTORY Fort Hetzel was located at the Center of East Ellijay in Gilmer County. The Fort was abandoned March 24, 1842 and an historical marker currently designates the former location.
