The Commissioner for Consumer Protection is the member of the European Commission responsible for Consumer Protection . The current Commissioner is Meglena Kuneva ( ALDE ). This specific portfolio was created in 2007 , separate from the European Commissioner For Health portfolio. It first appeared in the Jenkins Commission as "Consumer Affairs" though this (2007) is the first time it has been an independent portfolio. The post is responsible for the Protection Of European Consumers Rights . CURRENT COMMISSIONER The independent portfolio was created when Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union on 1 January 2007 . It was previously part of the Health & Consumer Protection portfolio which was held by Markos Kyprianou . Unlike the Multilingualism Portfolio that was created for Leonard Orban , this post was welcomed due to the large size of the combined portfolio. The Directorate-General is Still Merged With That Office . Kuneva was decisively approved by the European Parliament on 12 December 2006 with 583 votes "in favour", 21 votes "against" and 28 votes "abstentions". She took office on January 1st 2007 when her country joined the Union. Current cabinet
