Emily Robison (born August 16 , 1972 ) is an American Country Songwriter , Singer , and Multi-instrumentalist , and a founding member of the all-female Country Music band the Dixie Chicks . BIOGRAPHY Early years Born Emily Burns Erwin in Pittsfield , Massachusetts , she was raised in Texas . As seen in their documentary Shut Up And Sing Martie, jokingly, tells of how her sister Emily was better at her at the violin and that because she wanted to stick with the violin she forced Emily into learning something else. Hence, this is why Emily plays the banjo now. From around 1983 on, Emily toured along with her sister in the teenage Bluegrass group Blue Night Express. She attended Greenhill School in Addison, Texas . Dixie Chicks She and Martie were then part of the formation of the Dixie Chicks in 1989. Originally billed as Emily Erwin, she plays Banjo , Dobro , Acoustic Guitar , Electric Guitar , Papoose , Accordion , and Sitar , and sings Background Vocals in the group. Emily wrote the majority of The Dixie Chicks' hit "You Were Mine", while her sister Martie wrote the bridge. {Link without Title} Personal life Emily married "), and since then has been billed as Emily Robison.
