Ellon, Scotland




Ellon () people in Aberdeenshire , Scotland , approximately 16 Mile s north of Aberdeen . Ellon is essentially a Dormitory Town for Aberdeen and is linked to the City of Aberdeen by the A90 Road . It lies on the Ythan river (pronounced ''eye-than''), which has one of few undeveloped river Estuaries on the eastern Coast of Scotland. It is in the ancient region of Formartine .


HISTORY

The town developed in Prehistoric times since it provided the only feasible site for fording the Ythan Estuary. The town was the principal settlement of the Pictish province of Buchan before 400BC; furthermore, in the Middle Ages the Celt ic Mormaers and later the Norman (Comyn) Earls of Buchan held court and dispensed justice at Moot Hill, also known as Earl's Mount. Arnage Castle, a 16th century fortification is five miles north.


EDUCATION AND LEISURE


The town has three Primary Schools , all of a high standard of education. The primary schools are as follows:
  • Ellon Primary School

  • Auchterellon Primary School

  • Meiklemill Primary School

  • Each of these schools has some form of Greenspace as well as a Concrete Playground . These schools feed into Ellon Academy , the local secondary school which currently has a roll of about 1,200 pupils. However, due to residential development in the area that figure is set to rise. A new school is planned to contain the influx of new pupils, and is expected to be finished by 2015 .


Ellon has a Community centre, which includes a Swimming Pool and café. Ellon also has one of north-east Scotland 's youth groups, which is centred around the Ythan Centre, a building dedicated to serving the needs of Ellon's teenage population. This facility includes a sound-proofed room where amateur bands can practice in peace.


ELLON TODAY


Ellon has benefited from the North Sea Oil boom, and like many other towns around Aberdeen , is one of the main dormiroy towns for Aberdeen . The population seems to know no limits, and as young families seek to escape the hustle and bustle of city life they leave Aberdeen and flock to places like Ellon, Inverurie and Banchory . A house that cost £100,000 in 1980 may only be within reach of Millionaires today. Ellon is ranked as the fourth most expensive town in Scotland {Link without Title} .
